Oh Books!

From Ramen to Putin, looking post corona, war and travel. Here are some good reads for 2021 — Is it too early for a summer book list? Probably not, since this will be a bit of an on-off summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Rainy Day Ramen and the Cosmic Pachinko by Gordon Vanstone. A delightfully debauched, spiritual quest through a hallucinatory Japan of cursed gaijin houses, seedy hostess…

How to negotiate a big deal

Here are the key elements you should consider with closing that last quarter big deal. — Plenty of people will give you advice on how to close a deal. However, what about a huge deal, one that represents a significant percentage of annual or quarterly revenue. It’s a deal in which the CEO and the Board will take particular interest. A framework for identifying risks

Productivity — does it have to start with a list?

Love them or hate them; lists can be useful, groceries, Christmas presents and perhaps holiday packing. However, I don’t think they are much used in managing personal or business goals, yet you will find many lists on the internet that promise the earth. In the next month nearly every newspaper…

How I try to make my resolutions stick.

Research conducted in the UK suggests that less than 8% of resolutions survive to the end of January. So I’m going to presume I’m no different from everyone else. I ask myself one question when I’m trying to change a habit. What is the least I have to do to make this change? So what are people doing that make their resolutions so hard to keep? …

Questions I ask myself at the start of each year.

I picked up on David Allen’s GTD methodology sometime ago, in the ’90s email was getting out of hand, and I wanted to tame the beast. I found that Getting Things Done was easy to understand and implement. But more importantly, the writing around GTD was more interesting. I discovered…

Spicy Mushroom Lettuce Wraps

This recipe is a riff on the excellent Spicy Chicken Lettuce Wraps by Christina Chaey. The starting point was to make this a vegetarian recipe. King Oyster Mushrooms would give the right texture. (4 as a snack or 2 as a main course with rice) Ingredients 2 tbsp. Tamari or Soy…

Ramen

To be honest, I didn’t know what all the fuss was about until I pushed a sliding door open and walked into a tiny Ramen joint in Itaewon one cold February lunchtime. They only sold one type of Ramen. One mouth burning taste later, and I was hooked. Unlike most…

Some thoughts on decision making.

Our decision-making process is always more important than just making a decision. A well informed and transparent decision has a higher chance of successful implementation than a lucky guess. There is an ancient Chinese curse “May you live in interesting times”. This moment qualifies. Decision making becomes more critical as the implications for each decision become more complex to judge.
